Rosie Can Now Build and Fix Spreadsheets for You

Until recently, Rosie served as a brilliant analyst: ask a question, get an answer. With Model Manipulation, she graduates to full-fledged builder. Rosie can now:

• Write & debug formulas
• Apply clean, consistent formatting
• Create charts
• Fix broken models

Think of her as an Excel expert teammate who can not only explain things but also do the spreadsheet work on your behalf while you focus on what matters.

=Example: Mortgage Calculator from Scratch

Never stare at a blank spreadsheet again. Just tell Rosie what you need. For example, let’s say you wanted to calculate what your monthly mortgage should be. Simply ask Rosie:

“Can you build a model to calculate the monthly payment on a $500,000 30-year fixed rate mortgage at 6.5%?”

Rosie will build the mortgage calculator in Excel, complete with correctly incorporated PMT equation. A followup request to format the spreadsheet and calculate total payments after the loan is paid off in full results in Rosie adding a cumulative interest row, bolded headings, and re-sized columns — all done for you!

But let’s say you want to understand how much waiting for a better interest rate will impact your monthly payment. Instead of manually trying out an array of values or remembering how to use an Excel data table, you can simply ask Rosie,  “Can you show how much the monthly payment changes if the interest rates go up or down?”

Let’s say you’ve been asked to compare how the stock prices for Meta and Microsoft have done over time? Before Rosie, you would have needed to manually normalize their share prices and then insert the chart yourself, a finicky process for all but the most experienced Excel users. With Rosie, this is all taken care of for you by simply asking:

“I want to compare the relative movements of MSFT and META. Graph their share prices, normalized to the same starting point so I can see how they've performed.”

One of the most important analyses a private investor does is around understanding how fundraising impacts ownership and how potential exit options affect returns. The spreadsheets that tackle this can be large & complicated, often requiring meaningful time to understand and tweak.

This is perfect for Rosie! In the video above, I walk through a complicated company ownership spreadsheet (a “cap table”) where Rosie not only explains how the spreadsheet works, but also fixes an error I spot. 

I then ask it to show me what happens to investor returns if the company exits at larger valuations. Finally, I have Rosie show me what happens to the company ownership if they raise a $40M Series D round of financing at a particular valuation.

Rosie does it all — and far faster than I could even explain to a junior analyst.

Excel is a critical piece of modern-day financial and business infrastructure. But, using Excel can be very complicated and can unnecessarily slow down an executive or knowledge worker who’s just trying to get an answer.
